No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.—1 John 4:12

Fairlawn Lutheran Church has quietly become involved in peacemaking. More importantly for our members, we are actively pursuing conflict resolution of any type or form that may exist: church, home, school, or place of employment. Specifically, it is our desire to first resolve conflicts as they may exist among members and then to avoid and eliminate those conflicts as each of us adopt and incorporate the peacemaking principles in our own lives. The peacemaking principles are:

Glorify God (I Cor. 10:31). Biblical peacemaking is motivated and guided by a deep desire to bring honor to God by revealing the reconciling love and power of Jesus Christ.

Get the log out of your eye (Matt. 7:5). Attacking others only invites counterattacks. This is why Jesus teaches us to face up to our own contributions to a conflict before we focus on what others have done.

Gently restore
(Gal. 6:1). When others fail to see their contributions to a conflict, we sometimes need to graciously show them their fault.

Go and be reconciled (Mat. 5:24). Finally, peacemaking involves a commit- ment to restoring damaged relationships and negotiating just agreements. When we forgive others as Jesus has forgiven us and seek solutions that satisfy others’ interests as well as our own, the debris of conflict is cleared away and the door is opened for genuine peace.

God provides answers for us in His Word. Peacemaking is entirely biblically based. If you are in an unresolved conflict and/or would like more informa- tion, please contact Pastor Tom or Ron Gsellman in confidence.
