All of Fairlawn’s musical groups participated including the Senior Choir, Jubilee Bells Hand-bell Choir, and the Covenant Praise Band. The chancel was decorated with balloons which were given to the many children following the Children’s Message. Children ranging from toddlers to high school youth came forward for his message. Thanking the congregation for the 24 years of shared ministry, he preached his final sermon based on the first chapter of Philippians, verses 3 through 6: “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the Gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” The worship service was followed by a celebration luncheon at Todaro’s Party Center for nearly 500 people. Pastor was “lightly roasted” by several leaders of the congregation and staff including John Musch, President of FLC when Pastor arrived in 1982. The church was presented with an oil painting of Pastor Lentner by member and artist, Carolyn Lewis. He was also presented with a monetary gift and a book of letters and remembrances. Bob Fischer, current president of FLC, concluded with remarks focusing on Pastor’s leadership and his preparation of the church and congregation for the future. Pastor Lentner concluded the program with a wonderful tribute to his wife, Ellie, followed by a waltz to one of their favorite pieces of music. Associate Pastor, Rev. Robert Graul, will continue serving Fairlawn Lutheran Church as the search for a new Senior Pastor continues.
